The proposal ...
The topic I would like to explore is greed with in our country. The power of money and corruption runs deep through the veins of many countries. Including our own history and modern day affairs. I feel that this is a lot of what is wrong with our country today, therefore, it has a lot to offer for this assignment.
Greed can take forms such as greed for money, for power, or for influence. Many of our politicians are infected with this poison. This in turn looms over our countries success, like a black hole wanting to suck us in. As demonstrated in the following quotes greed infected politicians has long been an issue for us.
"[Political] offices are as acceptable here as elsewhere, and whenever a man casts a longing eye on them, a rottenness begins in his conduct." -- Thomas Jefferson, 1799
"Nothing brings out the lower traits of human nature like office seeking." -- Rutherford B. Hayes, 1878
I envision a mash up that depicts the effects of greed. This includes the effects on our economy as a whole, effects on job loss, the housing market and funding for our schools. I plan to incorporate the idea that greed is out of control, but something we could have much control over. Success, compensation, ambition, competition are all good but, within reason.
I expect to find images of protests and pain. I expect to find images of neighborhoods where there are many houses for sale. There will be newspaper articles of the economic failure our country faces and families living in poverty. I will find examples of corporate greed and capitalism. There will be stories and images of war. I will probably find information about outrageous amount of money our leaders and CEO's make compared to the average workers.
Greed effects many facets of our lives. We live and abide by a corrupt government, politicians, law enforcement officials, and religious officials. We work for corrupt CEO's, and corporations. We live among our very own and very real "wolves on wall street". Who can we trust to protect the poor and innocent? Who is in their position for the right reasons, who has not been taken over by wealth and power?
Manipulation and deception are what victims are faced with when greed plays a role in destroying their lives. Relationships are tore apart. Judgement becomes flawed. Morals and ethics are thrown out the window, anything goes in this cut-throat way of living. Stopping at nothing, no one, to fill their very own pockets. They take in to account none of the destruction along the way, the ruthless and damaging destruction that consumes innocent, hard working victims. People today have lost their jobs, homes, health insurance, retirement funds and dignity all to greed. Our children and children's children will face so much debt due the way our country is today. When is enough, enough? Everyday people are broken, while our "leaders" are more comfortable then ever.
I have found a few different types of music I would like to try to incorporate. I found videos on YouTube that I think would pull everything together well. One video is in favor of corporate greed from the standpoint of Wall Street bankers, whom reference the fictional Gordon Gekko, that "greed is good". Another video is a child-like cartoon where the character is addicted to greed, it shows how it must be mentally and emotionally draining it is (after just watching the video I felt scrambled and exhausted). In addition, there is the corporate greed anthum song which really calls out wall street and the damaging effects of greed.
